Big problems for Lotteries in the news lately.
Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. got nailed for covering up a legitimate win as reported in a case "involving a now 82-year-old cancer survivor who said he was defrauded out of a $250,000 prize by a variety-store owner in Coboconk, Ont., and told he had only won a free ticket. The lottery corporation settled a lawsuit with Robert Edmonds in March of 2005, just as the civil trial was about to be decided by the jury." after trying to cover up the scam(reported in the Globe & Mail last week).
In addition to the OLGC's reprehensible conduct and the ensuing public relations nightmare that they should be roasted for just a bit longer, it was revealed that the instances of insiders claming jackpots and pocketing the winnings has sparked an investigation by the Ombudsman of Ontario.
The way I see it, it is really only a pipe dream for $2 when the odds (as astronomical as they are to begin with) are not tampered with by the people who are entrusted to peddle them to the average Joe on behalf of the government. And in the event that a retailer gets caught cheating the system, you'd hope the OLGC would stand up for the little guy and come clean instead of what they did here.
